American Institute Celebrates World Diabetes Day

West Hartford, CT– On Friday, November 14th, 2014, World Diabetes Day was celebrated around the world. Our West Hartford and Clifton campuses both held Open Houses this year to recognize the important day. Diabetes is a disease American Institute holds close to its heart, especially at our West Hartford and Clifton campuses, with key staff members directly affected.

The West Hartford campus celebrated World Diabetes Day by inviting the community to attend our Open House to speak with specialist Betsy Gaudian about the disease. Ms. Gaudian is a Registered Nurse, Certified Diabetes Educator, and Dietician, with extensive knowledge on treating and preventing diabetes, as well as tips to help manage living with diabetes to avoid potentially serious complications. FastTrack Phlebotomy Technician students were on hand for the Open House to test blood sugar for attendees to identify if they were at risk. In Clifton, Medical Assisting students gained experience while preforming the tests, helping to expand awareness in the community about diabetes while helping attendees find out their personal blood sugar numbers.

Every year on November 14th, World Diabetes Day is celebrated. It was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to the growing need for knowledge about diabetes. While the campaign lasts year-round, the day itself is celebrated November 14th to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting, who along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1921. 387 million people around the world live with diabetes, and one in four don’t even realize they have it!
